RUMM was tasked with providing strategic planning support and project management to oversee the installation of aM&T systems to 80% of the Universities across Wales. This sector is overseen by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW).
The aim of the remit was to reduce electricity, gas and water consumption at each institution by 5% over a 12 month period.
RUMM undertook site surveys at each institution, generated bespoke plans for meter installations, procured instrumentation, organised and managed install teams, commissioned completed aM&T systems and in some cases dealt with utility suppliers to ensure pulse connections were available from billing meters.
In total, 600 meters were installed over a period of 10-12 months. This was achieved with minimal disruption to each institution. In the year following installation, RUMM was able to prevent a 7% increase in energy consumption at the University of Wales Institute in Cardiff (UWIC).
A 5 year plan was then established at UWIC with the main focus on raising awareness and making energy savings via good housekeeping and waste minimisation
Why it Worked
With the capacity to undertake individual site surveys, skilled project management services, and by working closely with each university, RUMM was able to create tailored projects to suit each environment. Furthermore, RUMM’s software expertise meant it was able to create an additional bespoke software solution, producing consumption information in a simplified format allowing HEFCW to integrate the system with future services.
